René Yañez – San Francisco (b. 1942) Instrumental in bringing the observance of Dia de los Muertos to the Mission District, along with Rooms for the Dead and Labyrinth for the Dead. His current work deals with implications of trans-genetic effects on deity, and lesser-known, tortilla apparitions.

San Francisco…Yañez was given an eviction notice in July, 2013, under the Ellis Act. Once largely dormant, over 116 Ellis Act evictions have been filed since late 2012.

“I see them everyday, the hordes of iPad and iPhone texting zombies, oblivious to us and our lives, our inspirations and tribulations,” wrote Yañez’ friend, Guillermo Gómez-Peña.

“…Census data, noting that the Mission has lost 1,400 Latino households while adding 2,900 white households between 1990 and 2011. In the same time period, Oakland lost 40 percent of its black residents.”
